Job Description – Thermodynamic Engineer (SFA/ETO – Chillers)
Job Summary
The Thermodynamic Engineer is a key member of the SFA/ETO team within the Thermal Management Engineering & R&D Department. The role encompasses the full lifecycle of special chiller projects, from initial quotation and feasibility assessment to detailed design, engineering, and implementation. The engineer works closely with mechanical and electrical colleagues within the SFA/ETO team and with Application Engineers to ensure that customer-specific units are accurately designed, engineered, and delivered on time. Responsibilities include preparing technical and cost proposals, performing thermodynamic calculations, selecting components, and ensuring compliance with customer requirements and company standards. The role is central to enabling customized, engineered-to-order solutions.
This position will be based onsite at our Westerville, OH - Polaris location.
Responsibilities:
- Perform quotation and cost evaluation for customer-requested modifications to the standard product.
- Design and optimize the main components of chillers for data centers, ensuring optimal thermodynamic performance and energy efficiency.
- Collaborate with Application Engineers to understand customer requirements and propose solutions that balance performance and cost.
- Coordinate with mechanical and electrical team members for the implementation of approved special units.
- Ensure that design solutions meet standards for quality, reliability, cost, and delivery time.
- Review and approve technical documentation (CAD drawings, specifications, BOMs).
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing special project development with production line support.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or a degree with a thermodynamic background.
- 5+ years of experience in chiller or liquid HVAC system design, preferably for data center applications.
- Strong knowledge of thermodynamic and refrigeration principles, with focus on high-reliability performance.
- Ability to analyze customer requests and develop customized solutions.
- Experience with full product lifecycle management, Lean/Six Sigma concepts preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; effective collaboration within the SFA team and with other departments.
- Results-oriented, detail-focused, and team player.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to complex requests.
- Willingness to travel if required.
- Residence in or willing to relocate to the Columbus, OH area.
